Horace Poolaw was born on March 13, 1906. He was given the name "Big Horse," because everyone could see that he would grow to be a large man. Poolaw's father was known as Kiowa George. He was a calendar keeper, bow maker, and sweat-house doctor. His mother was Tsomah, the daughter of Mexican captives. Tsomah was raised as a Kiowa."
