About the Piece:
This charming style of precious Zuni maiden figure developed with Theresa Waseta and her family. Now it's continued by her daughter, Joyce. Each little maiden in this vintage cuff is hand inlaid by Theresa Waseta. There are five of them in all, dressed in their traditional attire and inlaid of turquoise, mother of pearl, coral and jet. While unified in form, each little face has its own sweet personality.
Earlier artists who worked at Zuni Pueblo including Leo Poblano's wife, Daisy Hooee Nampeyo from Hopi, had enchanted collectors with different styles of inlay maidens. From the 1960's on, this Waseta design has become instantly recognizable.Â
I’ve always felt Theresa Waseta’s bracelets make especially meaningful gifts—whether for a grandmother, a mother, a sister, or even a circle of close friends.. Can you imagine!
This bracelet measures 5 3/4" inside plus a 1" opening that can be gently adjusted as the sterling silver is lightweight. The width is 1 1/8". Etched signature on the reverse.
It's from the collection of my dear friend, Sally, who purchased it while she worked at Martha Struever's gallery. You may have met Sally before at one of our Eldorado Show openings where she expertly assisted at the busy contemporary jewelry section. Sally was an artist with a keen eye, and she loved whimsy.Â
