Here in the Southwest we love our vintage Mexican silver because it just goes with the design aesthetic here. As you might imagine, there are cross-cultural design elements between our first love, Native American jewelry, and Mexican silver.

This modernist silver necklace is by one of the greats of Taxco Mexican silver, Antonio Piñeda. Born in 1919, Piñeda began apprenticing with William Spratling at the age of just 14. In 1941, he opened his own workshop and quickly became the leader of the Mexican modernist movement.

This pointed collar necklace shows you what an incredible designer Piñeda was. It's a wearable sculpture in a silver medium. No stones are even needed. When you fasten this necklace on, you'll find yourself spellbound. Others will too.

It's comprised of ridged chevron lengths that are graduated in size. When you wear this Piñeda necklace with a simple black top or dress, the effect is stunning!

Hallmarks are significant in Mexican silver. This one is stamped with the crown mark and Made in Mexico/YY/512 Eagle, so it's dated between 1953 and 1979.

A similar Piñeda necklace was exhibited in the show "Silver Seduction: The Art of Mexican Modernist Antonio Pineda" in Los Angeles UCLA's Fowler Museum in 2008.

The largest chevron measures 1 1/2" long.

It comes from a fine collection of mostly Native American jewelry with a few prime examples of Mexican silver in it.

You can read more about the master silversmith Piñeda here.
