This vintage ornament is after my heart. It's a Hopi handmade one-horned katsina. It's also a rattle which is spiritual in nature.
Gourd rattles are used in Hopi ceremonies to carry prayers and call for rain. In fact, the sound that Hopi rattles make is like raindrops falling on the crops.
This katsina rattle ornament is hand-made of wood and hand-painted in beautiful bright turquoise with the appropriate eye and mouth shape of the one-horned katsina.Â
Hanging this representation of a Hopi ceremonial object on your Christmas tree is a beautiful point of connection between religious traditions - something we're in dire need of today.
If you're not religious, simply brighten up a corner of your room with it during any time of the year.
This lovely and symbolic one-of-a-kind holiday ornament is from Martha Struever's personal collection of Christmas ornaments.
It's unsigned and measures 4 3/4" x 4" not including the wire hanger.
