This is a stunning necklace handmade by the late Hopi jeweler Philip Sekaquaptewa or Weseoma who originally learned the art of jewelry making at the Hopi Arts and Crafts Silvercraft Cooperative Guild located on Second Mesa. While many former Hopi Guild students are known for their wonderful silver overlay jewelry, Phil Sekaquaptewa often took his jewelry a step further by incorporating colorful stones, sometimes in an inlay technique. His jewelry quickly developed into highly unique contemporary art pieces.
This necklace is a fabulous showcase of Phil Sekaquaptewa's many talents. He created large crow mother figure of contemporary Hopi silver overlay. Within the almost 4" long crow mother, Phil created a channel inlay section. The crow mother figure extends down the side of his richly hued hand-beaded necklace of lapis, azurite malachite and chrysocolla. Sekaquaptewa has even placed a handmade elongated silver spacer bead on the other side of the necklace just for balance and harmony.
Even though he passed away in 2003, Philip Sekaquaptewa's jewelry is still impressive and of-the-moment more than two decades later.
As is so often the case with original, artistic Native jewelry, when you put this on, you'll find yourself transformed by the beauty of its design and the skill of its maker.
Necklace measures 21" from end to end. Each little barrel bead is about 1/2" long. Necklace is unsigned but 100% Phil Sekaquaptewa's greatness.
Enjoy watching its tremendous presence in this video.
