Vintage Mary and Joe Calabaza Necklace of Melon Shell Three Strands
Vintage Mary and Joe Calabaza Necklace of Melon Shell Three Strands
Once you've worn a necklace of great handmade heishi beads from Kewa Pueblo, you'll understand that there's nothing else like it. This three strand necklace of melon shell was made by Joe and Mary Calabaza who were renowned bead makers from Kewa or Santo Domingo Pueblo, known best for their extra-fine heishi necklaces.Â
It's difficult to find work by Joe and Mary Calabaza, and this one is an elegant representation of their artistry. The necklace is a beautiful and wearable pale peachy color with three accent beads per strand of turquoise and spiny oyster. There's also a single silver bead up top by the silver cones. Most importantly, if you close your eyes and run your fingers over these beads, you'll feel them singing to you. It's a rare trait possessed by only the finest necklaces that are lovingly made by hand.
This piece measures 27 1/2" from end to end and closes with a silver clasp. It's unsigned, but it comes with a copy of an original receipt.
