Hopi Overlay Water Wave Bracelet by Andrew Saufkie
Hopi Overlay Water Wave Bracelet by Andrew Saufkie
In these current times when water is an increasingly rare gift, especially for people of the American Southwest, this bracelet with a repeating water wave design is meaningful. That it's handmade by Andrew Saufkie, from an outstanding lineage of Hopi jewelers is even more wonderful.
Andrew is the son of Paul Saufkie, Sr., one of the originators of Hopi overlay, the technique used in this bracelet. Andrew's father, Paul Saufkie, was also a teacher of this method in the World War II Hopi veterans silver working classes that eventually blossomed into the Hopi Silvercraft Cooperative Guild. With a father like Paul, Andrew and his brother, Lawrence Saufkie, were destined for greatness.
This water wave bracelets is simple in design but striking because of that simplicity. It measures 5 5/8" inside with a 1 1/8" opening which can be adjusted. The width is 1" and the bracelet is signed with AS, Andrew Saufkie's early hallmark. He began working in 1971, so this piece is likely an early 1970's cuff.
