This is one of those pieces filled with nostalgia. Put this belt on, and it takes you back to an bygone era. In fact, this style of vintage Navajo chip inlay jewelry is having a renaissance right now as it's a cool new look to collectors who weren't alive during its original 1970's heyday.
This eye catching chip inlay belt was handmade by the originator of the style, Navajo jeweler Tommy Singer. It's an early piece by Singer, and each silver concho features two inlaid waterbirds of turquoise and coral, bodies elegantly curving to form one of his most beloved motifs. In the center of the waterbirds is a teepee. Star, moon and mountain stamps in the silver complete Singer's design.
The silver inlay belt is heavy and of much better quality than some of the later pieces of chip inlay. There are eight rectangular conchos plus the buckle. Each measures 2 1/2" x 1 1/2" and the conchos attach to the vintage leather belt strap with traditional copper loops. The piece has a wonderful patina that only comes from the passing years.
The belt measures 34 1/2" from end to end including the buckle. It currently fits waists that are 25" - 29", but there's room for more holes in the belt strap if you've got a slightly larger waist. The buckle is signed with one of Tommy's early "T" hallmarks.
If you only add ONE chip inlay piece to your collection, this one is perfect because it's made by the master and it's giving strong 1970's vibes which are exactly what you want with this style of jewelry.
It's originally from a significant collection - many pieces from it were donated to a major art museum.
