About This Book:
This book examines art created by the Kiowa people while incarcerated at Fort Marion (St. Augustine, Florida) between 1875–1878. It especially focuses on drawings attributed to the warrior-artist Wo‑Haw (1855-1924). Art historian Moira F. Harris explores how this “Florida boys” group, imprisoned from five Southern Plains tribes, were given paper, pencils and color materials by their "humanitarian" jailer, Richard H. Pratt(who later founded Carslile Indian School), and how their creative work shifted from traditional Kiowa painting toward new forms for sale and display
Out of print. Notable for its contextual analysis of Plains Indian ledger drawings created at Fort Marion and for early color reproductions from museum and private collections.
