Here's a little biography on Victor Coochwytewa, best known as a master Hopi silversmith but also a man who used artistry, heorism, service, hard work, and humility to create a life as beautiful as the jewelry he's known for.
Since we’re all admirers of Native American art, I want to share with you a rare book celebrating Native American art and culture that’s written by a Hopi artist. It’s called Designs From The Ancient Mimbrenos With A Hopi Interpretation. The book was written and illustrated by Fred Kabotie, the fiercely beloved Hopi creative best known for his wonderful paintings and innovative silver overlay jewelry. Yes, THAT Fred Kabotie!
In the spirit of Mother's Day, I havetwo special excerpts from Native American stories about mothers. They come from an old publication calledTales of the Cochiti Indiansby Ruth Benedict, which is a collection of stories interpreted and recorded in the summer of 1924. The storytellers were elders from Cochiti Pueblo, and the tales I have chosen here were told by well-known female Cochiti narrators. The players are animal mothers and their children, and they give us a peek into the values of our Cochiti friends from almost 100 years ago.
