Vintage Navajo Pictorial Cow Vest of Handwoven Wool
Vintage Navajo Pictorial Cow Vest of Handwoven Wool
It takes confidence and a carefree spirit to wear a vest that's boldly emblazoned with the word "COW" across the back. Thank goodness for the adorable pictorial bovine that appears with the word.
This vintage handmade Navajo wool vest is actually fun as can be. It's a unique and playful statement piece to transform your look into something memorable. It's like a little extra infusion of joy - for you and those who see you walking across the room.
The front of the vest is a beautiful (and more subdued) design of bold red, orange, green and cream set against a natural grey background.Â
You could certainly buy a Navajo rug with these designs, but you could also wear one and style it to perfection by adding some Navajo jewelry and some simple clothing.
This vest was sold around 1990 by Teal McKibben (1928–2006), a well known Santa Fe Gallerist known for her incredible collection of Native American art. It initially belonged to a gentleman who was a Native art aficionado. The vest's current owner saw it worn by the man and fell madly in love. Eventually, she received the opportunity to purchase it for herself. She's an author, ethnologist, guest curator, and former professor with an indomitable spirit. In other words, she relished the chance to wear this whimsical vest to special openings at museums and shows. Â
The charming vest measures 19 3/4" across the front from under arm to under arm. In the front, it measures 20" long from top of shoulder to bottom. There's a zipper if you'd prefer to close the vest.Â
It's signed "D.A. Powell" or D.A. Powers" across the inside top.
What a phenomenal piece of unique clothing for a cowboy or ranch aesthetic!
