About the Piece: Vintage Navajo Hair Pin of Silver and Turquoise

Here's a different type of handmade Native American jewelry - it's a vintage Navajo silver and turquoise hair ornament from the estate of a long-time Native American jewelry collector in Albuquerque, New Mexico.

The hair pin or ornament is comprised of two handmade pieces. One part is the main ornament, beautifully hand-stamped scalloped sterling silver set with turquoise. The other part is a handmade silver hair pin set with turquoise at the oval decorative portion of the pin. 

If you pull your hair back, it will hold a section of hair that's about 2" wide by 7/8" thick, so it won't hold all of your hair at once. It looks beautiful placed at the back of your head holding two sides of hair pulled back there. The easiest way to wear this is to place part of your hair into an elastic and then slide the oval ornament over the elastic portion of the hair. Finally, the pin sticks into the hair through two holes in the ornament.

Keep in mind that for days you don't want the whole ornament in your hair, you can use the pretty pin portion all on its own for a pop of turquoise in the hair.

The ornament itself measures 2 1/2" across x 1 1/2" wide. The depth is about 1 1/8". The pin measures 5 1/2" from end to end.
