This is a charming hand beaded pictorial medicine pouch. The beautiful little two-sided bag depicts an eagle on one side and a turtle on the other in lovely detail. Notice the shading in the eagle's body achieved just with the use of different colored seed beads. Also notice the evergreen branch that the eagle is perched upon.

It's meant to be worn around your neck as a sweet adornment. The beaded necklace itself is done with green seed beads and other crystal beads in muted, complimentary colors. The tiny bag is also a functional holder of good and tiny things. Here are some little treasures this medicine bag would happily hold (not all at once) . . .

  • a key
  • one or two hard candies or mints
  • a single mini lip balm
  • a miniature mascara (Anastasia of Beverly Hills makes a nice one that will fit)
  • a few coins
  • a few tightly folded dollar bills
  • a small note with a positive affirmation
  • a blank piece of paper with a teeny tiny pen or pencil
  • gum
  • a tiny sample vial of perfume
  • one folded up tissue
  • a dried flower or two
  • a favorite fortune from your cookie

This wonderful little treasure is from the private collection of Martha Struever, the late Native American art dealer. I wonder what she would have carried in it. There had to have been a story behind this little beaded pouch. It's likely handmade by an Eastern Woodlands artist. Marti did purchase some lovely jewelry from a few Mohawk bead workers.

The bag/necklace measures 4 1/2" from top of bag to tip of fringe by 1 11/16" wide. The bag portion measures 3" x 1 11/16" wide. The necklace portion hangs 14 1/4" plus the 4 1/2" total bag.

It's such a well-done little piece of wearable art.
