These vintage sterling silver waterbird earrings capture a novel moment in Native American jewelry history with their chip inlay of turquoise and coral. They were made by the late jeweler Tommy Singer who is credited with bringing the chip inlay method to Navajo jewelry in the 1960's.
During the following decade, Navajo chip inlay jewelry was quite popular for its new look.Â
Even well respected Native American art dealer Martha Hopkins Struever jumped on board the Navajo chip inlay train with this enchanting pair of Tommy Singer's waterbird or peyote bird earrings from her private collection.
As the name suggests, the earrings are set with a mosaic inlay of little turquoise and coral chips fixed in a resin.Â
They dangle 2 1/4" from the top of the ear wire to the bottom of the bird's tail. They're 1/2" wide and signed "TC" on the reverse. Colorful and easy to wear the earrings will take you back to an incredible era of style.
