Vintage Navajo Earrings of Silver and Coral Conchos
Vintage Navajo Earrings of Silver and Coral Conchos
A Navajo concho is unmistakably Southwestern in style. Here we have a pair of handmade Navajo concho earrings for a variation on the theme.
Rather than being exactly round or oval, the earrings are graduated and elongated ovals - smaller on top and wider on the bottom. This variation on shape adds a lot of interest. In addition, the earrings are ever-so-slightly curved rather than being flat. These well thought out design elements show that the creator is an experienced silversmith.Â
The earrings are set with natural red coral stones instead of turquoise. This provides another nice contrast from the more ubiquitous green blue we're used to seeing in the Southwest.Â
They will look great with so many of your Native American treasures! If you've got a multi-strand coral necklace, of course, you can dress it up with these earrings. You can also mix and match your stones. Perhaps a turquoise necklace or bracelet with these concho earrings. Perhaps some Navajo pearls with these earrings. You can't go wrong!
They're hallmarked FIJ on the reverse, but I'm unfamiliar with that artist. They're from the collection of a lovely German woman who attended some of Martha Struever's famous Southwestern Native American art tours.
They measure a generous 1 3/8" x 1" wide. They're posts for pierced ears. Unlike some of the thin and light weight concho earrings you find today, these are thick and heavier sterling silver.
