Here is a very pretty vintage Kewa or Santo Domingo Pueblo jocla necklace. The handmade piece is a nice size - it's not nearly as massive as many you see, so it's much more easily wearable.

Made of very fine 2mm off-white clam shell heishi with turquoise nuggets, the necklace is delightful and unusual. It's a style that you see often in Native American Pueblo and Navajo necklaces. The joclas are the loops that hang down beyond the center of the necklace. They represent long beaded earrings that used to be tied on to necklaces when they weren't in use. These joclas are securely affixed to the necklace and cannot be taken on and off.

The beads are strung on waxed string that is braided and tied off for security. You simply slip the piece over your head.
